Job Overview
As a Waste Collection Supervisor, you will be responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the effective delivery of household waste collection services across the borough. This role involves supervising waste crews, managing daily operations, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. You will play a key role in maintaining service efficiency while addressing community priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervision & Operations:
- Oversee waste collection teams, ensuring all daily tasks are completed efficiently.
- Monitor and manage the crew’s performance via paper records or electronic handheld devices.
- Ensure adherence to service delivery standards and respond to community concerns.
- Health & Safety Compliance:
- Enforce compliance with Health & Safety regulations to protect employees, colleagues, and the public.
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure proper use of PPE and safety protocols.
- Train and guide employees, apprentices, trainees, and students on safe working practices.
- Waste Collection Duties:
- Supervise and participate in physically demanding waste collection tasks in all weather conditions.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of mechanical machinery for refuse container emptying.
- Ensure the security, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Customer Service & Communication:
- Provide excellent customer service, responding to public inquiries in a polite and professional manner.
- Address minor service delivery requests and escalate issues to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
- General Duties:
- Work under the guidance of a line manager to meet service delivery targets and respond to changing priorities.
- Ensure work is carried out within agreed schedules, timescales, and quality standards.
- Adhere to relevant legislation, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, CPC regulations, and council policies.
- Undertake additional duties as required by management.
Requirements & Skills
- Experience in waste management, environmental services, or a related operational role.
- Supervisory or team leadership experience in a physically demanding work environment.
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Effective communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
- Ability to manage records using paper and electronic systems.
- Flexibility to respond to operational changes and service demands
